Five layers are laser-cut from basswood plywood or felt — background first, line-work last — then glued together by hand, one layer at a time.

The five-layer cut

Five layers. One portrait.

Your pet's photo is redrawn as five separate silhouettes. Each becomes its own laser-cut layer — stacked from background to nose and glued by hand. The result has real depth: shadows move across the face as you walk past.

    Bright, even lighting
  • A ragdoll cat photographed straight on, at its own eye level

  • A schnauzer in true, unfiltered colour against a plain wall

Bad photo

What costs you a re-shoot

  • A beagle whose face is entirely out of focus
    Blurry or out of focus
  • A black lab sunk into shadow against a bright window
    Too dark or backlit
  • A siamese cat with the top of its head and one ear cut off by the frame
    Head or ears cropped
  • A small white dog photographed from across a living room
    Too far away
  • A pug shot from below, chin up and eyes rolled
    Awkward angle
  • A calico cat drowned in a magenta colour filter
    Heavy filters or edits
  • Take a short burst, then send the sharpest frame
  • Hold a treat just above the lens for the direct look
  • Wipe the lens first — a smudged phone softens everything
  • One pet per portrait; siblings get their own order
  • No flash — it washes out the fur detail we draw from
  • No digital zoom — step closer instead
  • Don't crop a face out of a group shot
  • Don't send a screenshot — the original file is sharper
